Social Work Class Using Virtual Reality Training Tool

WC’s Interventions with Individuals Social Work class had a great learning experience when one of its Social Work alumni, Shaylee Carson, joined the class and shared her many experiences working in the field and getting her Social Work license. She currently works for Clinton County Children’s Protective Services (CPS). She shared the amazing things she gets to do, as well as the challenges of the work and how she makes sure to include self-care in her daily routine.

She brought a virtual reality training tool created by Accenture, that CPS uses for their new hires. WC students got to try this tool out and found themselves transported into various client home environments where they had to observe their surroundings and non-verbal communication from the clients before choosing what questions to ask, working on defusing situations and ultimately choosing to leave or remove a child from their home. This tool has a full surround where you can look up, down, in a circle, and all around and you see every aspect of the home you are visiting. It was fun to watch each other respond and move around while interacting with the clients.
